OpenAI CEO sam Altman has expressed interest in acquiring google Chrome, but only if the US government compels google to sell the browser. This statement follows a report from the Wall Street Journal, which indicated that Perplexity AI had made a $34.5 billion cash offer for Chrome, a product of Alphabet.
Altman's remarks came in the wake of a significant antitrust ruling against google last year, where a judge determined that the company had unlawfully monopolized the online search market. In response, the Department of Justice has recommended that Chrome be divested to promote competition.
In a conversation with reporters, Altman remarked, "If Chrome is really going to sell, we should take a look at it," though he expressed skepticism about whether such a sale would actually occur.
In addition to contemplating the acquisition of Chrome, OpenAI is reportedly developing its own AI-driven browser. Altman noted that the recent hiring of Fidji Simo as CEO of Applications indicates the company's intent to diversify its consumer offerings beyond ChatGPT.
Altman also revealed OpenAI's interest in launching a new AI-enhanced social media platform, criticizing current AI applications on social media as uninspiring. He expressed a desire to explore the potential for creating a unique social experience powered by AI.
Furthermore, OpenAI is supporting a neural interface startup, Merge Labs, to rival Elon Musk's Neuralink. Altman expressed enthusiasm for neural interfaces, envisioning a future where users could think and receive responses from ChatGPT.
Tensions have arisen between Altman and Musk over perceived biases related to App Store rankings, with Altman challenging Musk's criticisms of ChatGPT's visibility on Apple's platform.
