The deceased, identified as 28-year-old Rakesh Kumar, was working as a laborer in the Pulwama district when militants opened fire on a group of non-local workers late sunday evening.
According to official sources, the attack took place in the Lassipora area, where militants targeted workers staying in temporary shelters. Rakesh sustained critical injuries in the assault and succumbed on the way to the hospital. Two other workers were reported injured and are undergoing treatment at a srinagar hospital.
Rakesh, a native of a small village near Thirthahalli in Shivamogga district, had moved to kashmir only six months ago in search of work. He was known to be a hardworking and humble individual, supporting his aging parents and two younger siblings back home.
The news of his death has cast a pall over his village, where friends and neighbors gathered at his family home to offer condolences. "He had gone there to earn a living. We never imagined he would come back like this," said a grieving relative.
Authorities have condemned the attack, with security forces launching a manhunt for the perpetrators. Karnataka chief minister has also expressed condolences and announced financial assistance for Rakesh’s family. "This is a tragic loss. We stand with the family in this difficult time," he said in a statement.
Rakesh’s body is expected to be flown back to karnataka by tuesday evening. His final rites will be held with full honors in his native village.
