đŁď¸Â 1. What is FASTag?
FASTag is an electronic toll collection system used on national highways and expressways in India. It uses RFID technology to automatically deduct toll charges from a linked account when a vehicle passes through a toll plaza â helping reduce congestion and eliminate cash payments.
âĄÂ 2. Toll Discounts on Partially Open or UnderâConstruction Roads
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has updated user fee rules for roads that are only partially operational â such as expressways still being built:
- Toll will be charged only for the completed and functional sections of such highways.
- On these sections, the toll rates may be lower or adjusted proportionately to reflect only the usable part of the road rather than the full design length.
This approach is often communicated as a kind of âreducedâ or âhalf tollâ charge for stretches not fully open â so travellers donât pay full rates on incomplete infrastructure.

đ 4. FASTag Annual Pass
For frequent highway travellers, the government launched a FASTag Annual Pass:
- Available for nonâcommercial private vehicles (cars, jeeps, vans).
- Valid for one year or up to 200 toll crossings â whichever comes first.
- Offers a flat payment instead of paying per toll crossing.
- Starting April 1, 2026, the fee for this pass will be âš3,075 (increased from âš3,000).
This is a costâeffective option for regular highway users as it avoids repeated toll recharges.
đ§žÂ 5. Penalty and Enforcement
Alongside the new toll rules:
- Authorities are strictly enforcing FASTag compliance. A tag must be properly affixed on the windscreen and linked to the correct vehicle registration to be valid.
- Vehicles without a valid FASTag or with malfunctioning tags are more likely to face penalty charges at toll plazas (via the double or 1.25Ă rule above).
đŁď¸Â Quick Summary â 5 Key FASTag Rules
Electronic toll payment via FASTag is standard on national highways and expressways.
Partially open roads (under construction or not fully functional) will only charge toll for the usable length â often at a reduced rate.
Without a valid FASTag:
⢠Cash = 2à toll,
⢠UPI = 1.25à toll.
FASTag Annual Pass gives up to 200 toll crossings for one yearly fee (âš3,075 from april 2026).
Tags must be functional and correctly affixed for automatic toll deduction; improper or absent tags can lead to higher charges.
