Many customers ask why they have to pay the service tax. However, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has given clarity on this. The National Restaurant Association of india has declared the imposition of service charge on restaurants illegal.

Are you going to a restaurant ..? Do you have a service charge along with the bill after the meal there ..? But you need to know this. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has given clarity on service charges in restaurants. Declared illegal to charge service charge by restaurant. This was revealed by the National Restaurant Association of india itself.

The ministry said the imposition of the service charge would have an impact on customers. It said the amount of service charge or tip to give to the staff who served the meal was at the discretion of the customer. Union minister Piyush Goyal has made it clear that going to a restaurant does not mean that he is willing to pay the service charge. If any restaurant owner says there is no entry if the service charge is not paid it is definitely a violation of the Consumer Protection Act.

Responding to this, NRAI said, "The service charge is applicable only to the staff serving the guests. The proceeds from the charge will be borne by the staff working in the restaurant. The restaurants will charge a service charge of 10 per cent of the total bill."

On the issue, Rohit Kumar Singh, secretary, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, said, "Restaurants will add service charge as they like. As per the rules, it should be optional." It was clarified that no service charge should be levied forcibly unless the customer wishes to do so.
