Weddings are full of opportunity for entertainment, whether they serve as the stage for touching studies of love or problematic family relationships. The people We Hate at the Wedding, a new original film from Prime Video, focuses significantly toward the latter aspect even though it still looks for instances of the first. The end result is a comedy that enjoys its cheesy humor, struggles to balance its various tones, but manages to land with its corny conclusion. The people We Hate at the Wedding won't appeal to everyone because of its occasionally unpleasant characters and extremely awkward circumstances, but it does have its charms.

This story revolves around an unusual family: When Donna (Allison Janney) was married to a philandering Frenchman (Isaach De Bankolé) residing in London, they had their first child, Eloise (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). After their divorce, she relocated back to the united states and remarried, giving birth to Paul (Ben Platt) and Alice, two more children (Kristen Bell). Even though the three siblings were very close as children, maturity has further widened the distance between their cultures. Eloise invites her American relatives to her wedding in the hopes of reuniting with them, but she is unaware that she is stepping into years of pent-up hatred that explodes through numerous mishaps in the run-up to the big event.

The people We Hate at the Wedding, a film based on Grant Ginder's book, features multiple romantic subplots in addition to the familial tensions at play. The screenplay was written by Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin and Wendy Molyneux. Alice, for instance, is having an affair with her married boss (Jorma Taccone), but her future plans are derailed by his lack of commitment and the charming stranger she met on the aircraft (Dustin Milligan). Paul must also take into account the fact that his partner Dominic (Karan Soni) appears to be keen on the idea of making their relationship public. A true ensemble comedy, The people We Hate at the Wedding certainly gives each member of its surprisingly large cast a fun project to work on.
