Shoigu's announcement is believed to be Russia's most important retreat since the war started in February.
According to Russian media, the news of the withdrawal of the Russian army came soon after the death of Kherson's deputy leader Kirill Stremousov in a car accident. Six days earlier, Kirill had signalled the Russian army to cross the river and move to the east bank.
