The Chief Minister's office did not respond to questions on the issue. Earlier in the afternoon, women and hundreds of youths wearing black shirts sat down on a dharna in front of the Chief Minister's residence and demanded that Biren Singh should not resign.

He said that the protesters were also seen burning tires in the middle of the road to block the police. When security personnel stopped the protesters from marching to Singh's residence, they turned violent, after which the police had to fire teargas shells and lathi charges to disperse the crowd.
