After being soaked by rainfall that entered her home in anjali Gardens in Hyderabad's manikonda in the wee hours of Tuesday, 5 september, a 10-day-old nameless newborn girl contracted fever. "My granddaughter had a fever yesterday of 101 degrees. After having her granddaughter evaluated by a doctor, Jakamma, a daily wager from Karnataka, informed South First that she was sleeping when the water entered our home. Videos and images of lives affected by the heavy rains that frequently hit hyderabad began to circulate on social media.

The situation was the same this time since some colonies were submerged by the recent torrential rains, which lingered until the morning of september 5 and left their occupants trapped and irate. manikonda, Quthbullapur, Kukatpally, and Gajularamaram were among the worst-hit places. For several hours before the water was pushed out, they remained unreachable. india Herald visited several of these communities and spoke with the locals about their recurring hardships.

Submerged manikonda colonies
Anjali Gardens and Panchavati households in manikonda were compelled to stay indoors due to the neighboring nalas overflowing. "Water invaded my home's ground level, rising up to a height of three to four feet. Every time it rains severely, there is street flooding here that originates from Lanco Hills, according to 39-year-old Vishwanath P, a resident of anjali Gardens, who spoke to india Herald.

The drain pipes in our lane have a capacity of 150 mm and were installed around 20 years ago; nevertheless, contractors had pointed out that the capacity should be 600 mm. Since then, the population has increased as well. Vishwanath spoke to the manikonda Municipality's apparently casual response to their problems, saying: "Since 2019, and even for the last month, we have been routinely appealing the authorities, but there has been no action on their part. Even presentations have been made a couple of times.
They always promise us a solution in a few days, but nothing ever materializes. Even yesterday, when they visited the area, the extra collector and municipality commissioner, provided the same guarantee. A few millimeters of further rain would have caused major water logging because the drains in the lanes were already nearly at capacity.

Locals' assertions were refuted by manikonda Municipality Commissioner K Phalgun Kumar, who informed india Herald that the anjali Gardens region had never before experienced flooding. He further stated that new, one-foot drains were being built in the region by the municipality and that the project would be finished in a week.
