However, relations with india have continued to be strained since the pro-Chinese government led by Mohamed Muisu came to power in the Maldives. The pro-China Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu came to power through the 'India Out' campaign. In january this year, relations between india and maldives soured after prime minister Narendra Modi visited Lakshadweep in a bid to boost domestic tourism.

Maldivian leaders mocked india and made slanderous remarks against prime minister Narendra Modi. Due to this, many indians decided to stay away from maldives and canceled their planned tourism trip to Maldives. Since then, the number of indian tourists visiting the maldives has declined drastically. But few indians visit Maldives. However, some recent incidents and various news reports suggest that maldives is not safe for tourists as extremists are very active there. In a recent incident, an indian couple was assaulted in a petty dispute near Central Park in Hulhumale. In another incident, an Israeli woman was reportedly targeted in the maldives and forced to leave the country.

Amid rising tensions between india and maldives, maldives Foreign minister Musa Zameer is scheduled to visit india next week. Jamir's visit to india will be the first high-level tour by either side since Muisu took office last year. Muizu has already traveled to China. But has not traveled to india yet. According to reports, a request regarding his visit is pending with New Delhi. Maldives is expected to seek more time to repay its loan from India. Successive Maldivian governments have received loans from india from time to time. Since Muisu has been leaning towards china since taking power, the security relationship with india has also been affected.
