Tamil Nadu: Two more FIRs filed against a YouTuber...?


The coimbatore police detained tamil YouTuber "Savukku" shankar on May 4 on suspicion of uttering disparaging statements against female police officials. Since then, two more complaints have been filed against him. The Greater chennai police announced on wednesday that it had opened two investigations in response to a complaint made by a Tamilar Munnetra Padai leader and female editor of a private media business.  Redpix, a YouTube channel manager, Felix Gerald, has also been listed as a co-accused. "An investigation is underway in both cases," a statement from the Greater chennai police stated.

The female editor later thanked the police in a post on X for responding to her initial complaint, which she filed six years prior. According to the police, shankar has been charged with violating sections 4 of the tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act as well as sections 294(b) of the indian Penal Code (obscene actions), 509 (activity intended to insult a woman's modesty), 354D (stalking), and 506 (criminal intimidation). After leaving the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), shankar founded Savukku media, which includes a YouTube channel and a web platform.

On May 4, while shankar from Theni was being transported to coimbatore by a team from the coimbatore City Cybercrime wing, the car had an accident in Dharapuram, Tiruppur district, resulting in minor injuries. shankar was sentenced to six months in prison for contempt of court in 2022 after making a speech that accused the "entire higher judiciary" of corruption. As a result, he spent more than two months in prison. Shankar's mother A Kamala filed a lawsuit in madras high court following his detention last week, alleging that he was beaten by coimbatore Central Prison guards. police have refuted the allegation and linked the injuries to the May 4 traffic collision.
