The bangladesh government has called back its senior diplomat Shabab Bin ahmed posted in the kolkata Consulate to Dhaka with immediate effect. According to the report of Dhaka newspaper Prothom Alo, Shabab Bin ahmed had issued instructions to ban the sacrifice of cows and goats in the consulate premises on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha (Bakrid). This order was issued even before he formally took charge.
Sacrifice has been done every year in the bangladesh Consulate in Kolkata. This tradition has been going on for the last 30 years. On this, Shabab Bin ahmed said that diplomats should respect the socio-cultural sentiments of the host country. However, no one supported the decision of the Deputy High Commissioner. The staff of the mission called Shabab Bin Ahmed's decision a disregard of sensitivity.
Impact on India-Bangladesh relations?
This incident has come to light at a time when the interim government of Mohammad Yunus is in power after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh. The Yunus government has been accused of supporting anti-India Islamic fundamentalists. At the same time, relations between india and bangladesh are already tense. This incident is being considered like "adding fuel to the fire", especially at a time when religious sentiments related to cows are considered very sensitive in India.
Bangladesh Embassy was in the Netherlands
Ahmed was posted at the bangladesh Embassy in The Hague, Netherlands. He was appointed to take over as Deputy High Commissioner at the kolkata Consulate on november 21, 2024. This posting was done after the fall of PM Sheikh Hasina's regime. The student movement played the biggest role in toppling the previous government, due to which Sheikh Hasina had to resign and flee the country to save her life.
