Amid growing tensions with india, bangladesh Industrial Development Authority (BIDA) Chairman Ashiq Chowdhury said that India has no economy zone in Mirsarai in Chittagong district. He said that such initiatives exist only on paper. However, earlier bangladesh had welcomed India's investment in Mirsarai. In the year 2020, india approved a loan of $ 115 million to build infrastructure on 900 acres of land in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Industrial City.
Bangladesh's statement on this project of India
BIDA Chairman Ashik Chowdhury said, "If we look at the main plan of Mirsarai Economic Zone, this plan was for 33,000 acres of land. We have reduced it to 10,000 to 15,000 acres in the first phase. We do not need so much land. We can consider the remaining land in two or three phases."
He said, "The indian Economic Zone here is only written on paper. It was part of the main plan, but no significant work was done on it." He said that there has been no development on this project since the interim government of Mohammad Yunus came to power in august last year (2024).
Bangladesh shot itself in the foot
Ashik Chowdhury said that this project is in a state of complete suspension. He said, "Chittagong port is the port of entire Bangladesh. We are saying that it is very important for entire South Asia, even for the northeastern states of india, nepal and Bhutan.
India-Bangladesh relations have become bitter after Mohammad Yunus's comment on the northeastern states in front of china earlier this year. india recently banned indian land ports for many goods from Bangladesh. india has banned the import of many goods including readymade garments, carbonated drinks, snacks, cotton and cotton yarn from bangladesh through road routes. Earlier, bangladesh had banned the import of yarn from india through land routes.
