The indian army is now going to replace its old Chetak and Cheetah helicopters with new and modern helicopters. For this, the army has planned to buy 126 light utility helicopters (LUH) from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This deal is now in its final stage and is expected to get approval soon.
What is the specialty of these new helicopters?
HAL has designed and manufactured this helicopter completely in India. This helicopter is specially designed to work in mountains and high altitude areas.
It can fly up to a height of 6,500 meters (21,300 feet).
Its speed is 235 km per hour.
It can fly up to 350 km at a time.
Due to these features, this helicopter will be very helpful in tasks like transporting troops and goods, evacuating injured soldiers and monitoring in Ladakh, siachen and other inaccessible areas.
Why is this change necessary?
The Chetak and Cheetah helicopters that the army is currently using are built on the technology of the 1960s and many helicopters are more than 30 years old. Flying with them is no longer free from danger. The new LUH helicopters will increase both the security and strength of the army.
Initial batch ready, technical problems also solved
Earlier there were some technical problems in this project, such as problems in flight control and autopilot system. But now HAL has said that all the problems have been resolved and the first 6 helicopters have also been prepared.
Promoting self-reliant India
This deal will not only increase the strength of the army, but will also promote indigenous defense manufacturing in the country. This purchase of 126 helicopters is part of a larger plan of a total of 225 LUH helicopters. This will give new momentum to India's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' campaign. These will prove to be very effective in delivering goods and monitoring China's LAC and Pakistan's LOC.
