Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay has been declared the Chief Ministerial candidate of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), for the 2026 tamil Nadu assembly elections.
TVK authorized Vijay to decide on the party’s alliances for the upcoming polls.
The announcement was made during a special general council meeting held on wednesday at a private hotel in Mahabalipuram, near Chennai.

Vijay attended the meeting in his trademark white shirt and stubble look.
The council adopted a total of 12 resolutions addressing key state and party issues.
Significant resolutions included:
Authorizing Vijay to make all decisions regarding 2026 electoral alliances.
Expressing support for fishermen from tamil Nadu facing recurring arrests by the Sri Lankan navy.
Ensuring women’s safety, highlighting the recent sexual assault case in Coimbatore.
Addressing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with a demand to halt it.
Demanding adequate police protection for Vijay and the public during TVK events.
Party Decisions and Leadership
The resolution noted that Vijay is "the cm candidate loved by all sections of people."
The party will contest the 2026 tamil Nadu assembly elections under his leadership.
The general council unanimously passed the resolutions, reflecting TVK’s collective support for Vijay.
Vijay convened the meeting, citing that the ground situation is favourable for TVK.
Tribute and Context
Members observed a two-minute silence for the 41 people killed in the Karur rally stampede on september 27.
The meeting also emphasized TVK’s criticism of the ruling DMK and discussed strategies for the upcoming election.
