Amid the deadlock over water sharing between punjab and haryana, congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala on sunday (May 4) questioned the Center's silence on the issue. He said that the Center should direct the Bhagwant Mann-led government not to create any obstacle in the allocation of water to Haryana.
Randeep Surjewala also mentioned the alleged deployment of punjab policemen at the Bhakra Dam in a press conference. He claimed that this is creating obstacles in releasing water to Haryana. He demanded that the Center should free it from 'illegal occupation'.
'Hand over the responsibility to CISF'
Rajya Sabha member Surjewala asked what is the reason that the narendra Modi-led government is not issuing written orders to the Mann government under Article 257 of the Constitution (related to the Center's control over states in certain matters). The congress leader questioned why the central government does not give instructions not to stop Haryana's water. He demanded that the Modi government should hand over the security of the Bhakra-Nangal Dam project to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
The deadlock over water sharing increased
Let us tell you that the deadlock between punjab and haryana over water sharing increased further on saturday (May 3), when the punjab government boycotted the meeting of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) and an all-party meeting in haryana asked the Mann government to release water unconditionally. aam aadmi party (AAP)-ruled punjab has refused to give more water to bharatiya janata party (BJP)-ruled haryana and claimed that the neighboring state has 'used 103 percent of the allocated water till March.' Union home Secretary Govind Mohan on friday (May 2) supported the BBMB's decision to release 4,500 cusecs of additional water from the Bhakra dam to haryana for the next eight days to meet the state's immediate water needs.
