Chennai — In the 2026–27 interim budget presented today, tamil Nadu Finance minister Thangam Thennarasu announced an allocation of 718 crore for the sports sector, underlining the state government’s commitment to promoting athletic development, infrastructure, and youth participation in sports.

Focus Areas of the sports Budget

The allocated funds are expected to be used for multiple initiatives, including:

Development of sports infrastructure across urban and rural areas, including stadiums, training centres, and playgrounds

Support for athletes, including scholarships, training programmes, and financial assistance for participation in national and international events

Promotion of grassroots and school-level sports, encouraging talent identification and development from a young age

Organisation of state-level competitions and tournaments to boost local engagement and competitiveness

Minister Thennarasu emphasized that investment in sports is not only about nurturing talent but also about promoting health, fitness, and overall youth development.

Government’s Commitment to sports and youth Development

The Finance minister highlighted that the allocation forms part of tamil Nadu’s broader strategy to integrate sports into educational and community development initiatives, ensuring that facilities and opportunities reach both urban and rural populations.

He stated:

“The state is committed to providing world-class infrastructure and support for athletes, as well as creating opportunities for the youth to engage in competitive and recreational sports.”

This sports allocation complements other youth and development initiatives announced in the interim budget, including:

Education infrastructure upgrades
