Morbi bridge collapse: 436 old bridges will be replaced...


After the cable bridge accident in Morbi, Gujarat, now the uttarakhand government has also become alert. The government of Pushkar Singh Dhami has decided that the old and dilapidated bridges of the state will be replaced. Bridges with more capacity will be built in place of these bridges. The Public Works Department of uttarakhand has identified a total of 436 such bridges in the state, which are old or dilapidated. Most of these bridges are in the hilly districts of Uttarakhand. It has been told that out of 436, 207 bridges are on the state highways built in the state.


In this regard, rk Sudhanshu, Principal Secretary of, the Public Works Department said, 'We conduct safety audits of bridges from time to time. Laxman Jhula bridge was closed only on safety audit. Reports of 436 old bridges have been received. These bridges will be replaced in a phased manner keeping in view the financial availability and their importance. 

Hundreds of bridges are old and dilapidated

Hundreds of bridges built on National or State Highways in uttarakhand are either old or dilapidated or they are not able to bear their load due to the increasing pressure of vehicles. Instructions were given by Principal Secretary rk Sundhashu to mark these bridges of the B category. A list of old bridges has been prepared on his instructions. Chief engineer (Public Works Department) Ayaz ahmed has confirmed the identification of the bridges.

Although the old bridges have been marked, the government will decide which of these bridges will be made of the A category first. According to Ayaz Ahmed, the proposals for all these bridges will be sent to the government. Departmental sources say that those bridges will be replaced first, which are being used the most and on which there is more pressure of vehicular movement. It will also be seen how many of these bridges are strategic and related to the importance of tourism and travel.
