Joshimath sinking: PMO calls high-level meeting...


The Prime Minister's office (PMO) has called a high level meeting after incidents of land subsidence and cracks in houses at many places in joshimath, Uttarakhand. PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to prime minister Narendra Modi, will hold a review meeting with the cabinet Secretary, senior officers of the Central government, members of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) today. Senior officials of joshimath district administration and uttarakhand government will also be connected in this meeting through video conferencing.

Significantly, the landslide that started from joshimath in uttarakhand has now reached Karnaprayag. While the people of joshimath are troubled by the incidents of land subsidence and cracks, on the other hand, cracks have started appearing in about 50 houses in Bahuguna nagar of Karnprayag Municipality. Due to landslides, cracks have started appearing in the walls of these houses. Although the government has shifted many families to temporary places.

600 families were evacuated to safe places

Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had visited joshimath yesterday to take stock of the situation at the ground level. Due to this, one day he had instructed to take about 600 affected families to safe places immediately. Dhami had said that joshimath is an important place from cultural, religious and tourism point of view and all efforts will be made to save it.

Joshimath is the gateway to famous pilgrimage centers like badrinath and Hemkund Sahib and Auli, the international skiing destination, and it faces a huge challenge. joshimath is slowly cracking and huge cracks are appearing in houses, roads and fields. local people say that many houses have sunk in it. joshimath is a small town situated at an altitude of 1890 meters in the 'Garhwal Himalayas' of uttarakhand under the Himalayan region. There is a population of more than 20,000 people here.
