The kerala authorities filed five FIRs on Nikesh Kumar, the director of the famous malayalam media outlet Reporter tv, in just one day. The police intervention followed a high court decision directing them to investigate certain claims levelled against actor Dileep, who is a defendant in two current cases. dileep had earlier sought and received a gag order against the journalists to prevent them from revealing anything relating to the first of these instances, which involved the kidnapping and sexual abuse of a female actress in kerala in february 2017 and the recording of the attack.

Dileep claimed in a suit filed on january 18 that Reporter tv and Nikesh Kumar had broken the gag order by disseminating information about the case without the court's permission. The court ordered the state troopers to investigate the claims and present a report to it within two weeks. The FIRs were all submitted on january 28 by Kochi's Cyber Attack police Precinct.

The first of the FIRs cites a post on Reporter's internet portal about a young female actress who was a victim in the actor rape case attempting suicide. According to a manorama Online referenced article in the writer's tale, the Crime Branch discovered no link between the attempted suicide and the dileep case. The second and third FIRs concern a video record implicating Jinson, a witness in the incident and previous roommate of Pulsar Suni, the primary suspect in the actor assault charge.
