A revanth reddy, the president of the telangana Pradesh congress Committee (TPCC), claimed on monday that 60 sarpanches in the state committed suicide as a result of the state government's failure to pay funds owed to the gramme panchayats. Speaking during a protest gathering the party organised to draw attention to the "plight" of sarpanches, Mr. reddy accused the K chandrasekhar Rao-led government of stealing 35,000 crore rupees worth of panchayat finances in the state.

"As the founding resident of the hamlet, the sarpanch is revered. In telangana, where the state administration has withheld payments, up to 60 sarpanches have killed themselves under duress "Reddy made a claim. The congress leader claimed that money allocated by the 15th Finance Commission that was deposited in sarpanches' accounts had been stolen by the state government and that some of the people's representatives had borrowed on interest to use their own money for the development of their respective villages.

He claimed that some of them took the drastic decision of taking their own life as they were still waiting for the money even after two or three years, while others pledged the "mangalsutras" of their spouses.
