Global anger has been sparked by a number of images and videos that have appeared on social media showing Israeli troops playing and posing with knickers discovered in abandoned Palestinian houses in Gaza. An Israeli soldier is shown smiling while sitting in an armchair in a room, holding a rifle in one hand, in a video that has gone viral on social media. According to news agency Reuters, he can be seen hanging a white woman's panties over the mouth of a male who is reclining on a sofa with his other hand.

An further image shows a soldier perched on a tap, clutching a black bra-clad female mannequin and uttering the words, "I found a beautiful wife, serious relationship in Gaza, great woman."

Following their upload by Palestinian reporter Younis Tirawi, the lingerie and mannequin photos and videos have been seen tens of thousands of times, as confirmed by Reuters.
 
In one picture, a soldier is shown holding his pistol and giving the thumbs up while standing in front of a bed that is covered with packs of women's knickers.
 
In another, a soldier is seen caressing a half-naked doll and another, a nude female mannequin, from behind with his hands resting on its breasts.
 
Such photos and films of Israeli troops' acts, according to UN Human Rights office spokesman Ravina Shamdasani, are "demeaning to Palestinian women and all women".
 
According to Reuters, she stated, "Posting such images is demeaning to Palestinian women, and all women."
 
An israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesman responded by saying that troops are expected to uphold morals and regulations and look into any instances of rule breakers, as well as any images or videos shared on social media.
 
"In cases where suspicion of a criminal offence arises that justifies opening an investigation, an investigation is opened by the military police," the statement read.
 
"It should be clarified that in some of the examined cases, it is concluded that the expression or behaviour of the soldiers in the video is inappropriate, and it is handled accordingly," the statement continued.
 
The IDF did not, however, clarify if it was alluding to the widely circulated pictures and videos of Israeli soldiers or if any measures had been taken against them.
