The central bank said that the service would be resumed on april 2. Due to activities related to the Annual Closing of Accounts, the Reserve bank of India's 19 Issue Offices will not be open on Monday, april 1, 2024, for the exchange or deposit of Rs 2,000 banknotes. On Tuesday, april 02, 2024, the plant will reopen," the RBI stated.

It should be mentioned that from May 19 of last year, individuals have been allowed to swap Rs 2,000 notes at the 19 RBI offices spread around different cities including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and others. However, this service will temporarily stop on april 1st and restart the following day due to the annual shutting of accounts.

Since october of the previous year, the RBI has permitted both people and companies to deposit Rs 2,000 notes into their bank accounts.

Almost 97.62% of the Rs 2,000 notes that have been in circulation since May 19, 2023, had been brought back into the banking system as of march 1, 2024.

When the Rs 2,000 notes were originally released in 2018, a substantial quantity of them—roughly Rs 3.56 lakh crore—were in circulation.

The entire amount of these notes in circulation, however, has decreased to Rs 8,470 crore as of february 29, 2024.

This cut is a result of the RBI's ongoing efforts to uphold a clean note policy, which guarantees the seamless operation of the financial system.
