A futuristic car that was hailed as the solution to convoluted gridlock has made its first flight.  The Rs 2.5 crore ($300,000) vehicle by Alef Aeronautics can be driven on the street like any other car, but it also has propellers in the trunk and bonnet that enable it to take off whenever it wants.  The US-based carmaker unveiled the first footage of the vehicle taking off, looking like it belongs in a science fiction film.

The vehicle was able to fly above the ground by using distributed electric propulsion and a mesh layer over the propeller blades.  The business employed a lightweight prototype of the Alef Model zero for the experiment, according to a New York Post story.  Jim Dukhovny, CEO of Alef, compared the accomplishment to the Wright Brothers' 1903 Kitty Hawk movie, saying: "This drive and flight test represents an important proof of technology in a real-world city environment."

Social media Reacts
Some social media users responded with laughter as the footage of the automobile driving off and colliding with another vehicle went viral, while others questioned if the business idea was feasible.

"Crazy. This is exactly how I imagined flying cars would be when I was 4," said one user, while another added: "I can only imagine the amount of energy required that is needed to lift this off the ground lol I'm going to have to figure out what it uses for its propulsion."

A third commented: "I'm not sure if parallel parking would become easier or disastrous."

Commercial Operations
A two-seater Alef Model A flying automobile with a driving range of 200 miles and a flying range of 110 miles is what Alef hopes to introduce for commercial use.  It is anticipated that the car will also be able to fly on autopilot.  According to the firm, 3,300 pre-orders have been placed thus far.

Alef plans to release an upgraded model, the Alef Model Z, by 2035. It will be a four-person flying car with a 400-mile driving range and a maximum flight distance of 200 miles.
