China has described the military operation carried out by india on terrorist camps in pakistan this morning as 'regrettable'. china has also stressed that both countries should act with restraint to reduce tension. While urging both countries, china has remained silent against india, as in the past, without registering any condemnation or strong comments. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said in a statement today, “India’s military action this morning is regrettable. We are concerned about the current situation. india and pakistan are always neighbors. They are both China’s neighbors. china opposes all forms of terrorism. We urge both sides to exercise calm and restraint in view of the broader interests of peace and stability, and to avoid actions that could further complicate the situation.”
India has reportedly carried out strikes on terror camps in pakistan and Pakistan-occupied kashmir (PoK) in retaliation for the pahalgam terror attack. china, Pakistan’s ‘ironclad ally’, has been urging restraint and a speedy investigation into the attack in recent days, despite condemning the pahalgam attack. Meanwhile, diplomatic ties between the two countries have been on the rise. Pakistani Deputy prime minister Ishaq Dar spoke to China's top diplomat Wang Yi on april 27. Chinese Ambassador to pakistan Jiang Zemin also met with prime minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Zardari.
Speaking to Pakistan's Deputy prime minister on the phone, Wang Yi stressed that china is closely monitoring the situation and that countering terrorism is a global responsibility. china supports an impartial investigation as soon as possible, as the conflict does not serve the fundamental interests of either india or pakistan and does not contribute to regional peace and stability. Although Wang said that "as an iron friend and a cooperative partner at all times, china fully understands Pakistan's legitimate security concerns and supports Pakistan's efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and security interests," political observers believe that the overall message is to de-escalate tensions and for both sides to exercise restraint. This is said to show that china is stepping back from its usual unconditional support for pakistan in such military confrontations. China's primary emphasis is on peace in the region. This seems to have abandoned Pakistan.
