Karur Stampede: supreme court Orders cbi Investigation

Incident Overview

Over 40 people lost their lives in a stampede during actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, tamil Nadu.

The rally was organized by Vijay’s party, the tamil Nadu Vetti Kazhagam (TVK).

TVK demanded an independent investigation into the stampede, alleging that the tamil Nadu Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT) would not inspire public confidence.

Supreme Court’s Verdict

The supreme court has accepted TVK's petition and ordered a cbi (Central Bureau of Investigation) probe into the stampede.

TVK had specifically requested a former supreme court judge to oversee the investigation to ensure impartiality.

The court appointed former Judge ajay Rastogi to monitor the cbi investigation, as per TVK's request.

TVK’s Claims

TVK argued that the stampede might have been part of a pre-planned conspiracy and needed an independent investigation.

TVK also expressed concerns about the tamil Nadu SIT’s ability to handle the case fairly.

Controversy and FIRs

In the aftermath of the stampede, police filed an FIR against several TVK members.

Accused TVK officials include Karur (North) district Secretary Madhiyazhagan, General Secretary Basi Anand, and Joint General Secretary CTR nirmal Kumar.

Charges included murder, attempted murder, and endangering public safety.

Police maintain there was no intelligence failure, noting that Vijay’s delayed arrival worsened the crowd's impatience.

Details of the Crowd’s Desperation

Police instructed the organizers to stop Vijay’s bus 50 meters from the venue, but the organizers ignored this and parked it at the designated spot.

Vijay delayed his exit from the bus for 10 minutes, leading to dissatisfaction and chaos among the crowd.

TVK’s Lack of Compliance

TVK had requested a permit for 10,000 attendees, but approximately 25,000 people gathered at the rally.

Authorities stated that TVK did not adhere to conditions related to crowd control, water, security, and other essential arrangements.
