After taking over as the Chief Justice of the supreme court, NV ramana not only initiated radical changes in the supreme court but also the judgments coming from the court were sensational. The supreme court has made it clear that life imprisonment is a harsh prison sentence and not a normal prison sentence. The supreme court made the remarks while hearing two petitions challenging the judgments of the himachal pradesh and guwahati High Courts.

Referring to the verdict of life imprisonment given in 1983, the bench comprising Justice L Nageshwara Rao and Justice BR Gawai made the following remarks. The tribunal clarified on this occasion that in the case of life imprisonment there is no need to reconsider as the law is already in full force.

According to Bar & Bench, the supreme court stated on tuesday that a sentence of life imprisonment signifies harsh imprisonment rather than simple jail and that the legislation on the subject does not need to be reexamined. It'll have to be maintained that the legal position concerning the sort of punishment entailed in the sentencing of life imprisonment is very well settled, and also that the judgment of life imprisonment must be equivalent to harsh life imprisonment,” the judgement said. In a subsequent case in 1992, the supreme court upheld the 1983 decision and did not send the matter to a larger bench.
