Another new variant of coronavirus has emerged. It is heavily mutated than the previous ones.

Scientists say the list of its mutations is so long that it is "terrible."

It is said to be the deadliest variant we have ever seen.

However, its prevalence is still at a basic level. These cases have only been reported in one region of South Africa. There are also suspicions that it may have spread further.

Completely new mutations

Of concern here is that it is very different from the coronavirus that first appeared in Wuhan, China.

That is, existing vaccines may not have as much effect on this. This includes mutations found in previously released variants. Through them, it is possible to learn more about this new variant.

However, so many frightening variants have emerged in the past as well. But, they did not actually have a big impact.

Similar concerns have been expressed about the beta variant. It is feared that this will not help the immune system.

But, the Delta variant that transcended it shook the world. "The beta variant is nothing more than an immune system escape. The Delta variant has infectivity as well as a mild immune system escape. Both of these new variants have high levels," said ravi Gupta, a professor at Cambridge University.

Over 80 cases in South Africa

Scientific studies in the laboratory give clear answers. But, the answers come more quickly by monitoring the virus in the real world.

However, there are indications that this variant is spreading faster than this.

Thus 90 per cent of cases in the Gauteng region may be due to a similar variant. It may have "spread to other parts of South Africa" as well.

However, it is unclear whether it spreads faster than the Delta variant, or even more severely, bypassing the protective system acquired by vaccines.

While many such questions remain unanswered, scientists say this new variant is worrying.

The pandemic has already taught us that we cannot wait until we have all the answers.
