New Delhi: The tamil Nadu government has said in the supreme court that there is no need to extend the production of oxygen at the Sterlite plant as there is currently no shortage of oxygen in the state.

Oxygen demand also increased during the 2nd wave of Govt spread in India. Following this, the government of tamil Nadu gave permission to open an oxygen production plant at the Sterlite plant premises in Thoothukudi on the orders of the supreme Court. As a result, maintenance work was carried out at the oxygen production station there and the first oxygen production started last May. The liquid and gaseous oxygen produced here is continuously sent throughout tamil Nadu for medical use.

The 3-month permit granted by the supreme court for the production of oxygen at the Sterlite plant ends tomorrow (July 31). Medical experts also warn that a 3rd wave could strike, as the Govt infection has not yet fully subsided. Sterlite, therefore, filed a petition in the supreme court seeking an extension of the permit granted for oxygen production at the Sterlite plant for another 6 months.

When the case came up for hearing, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the tamil Nadu government, said, “There is enough oxygen in tamil Nadu. There is no need to continue producing oxygen at the Sterlite plant, ”he said.
