What is the Thyroid?

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the lower part of the throat.

It produces hormones T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine).

These hormones regulate:

Energy levels

Heart rate

Body temperature

Common thyroid problems:

Hypothyroidism – an underactive gland producing too few hormones

Hyperthyroidism – an overactive gland producing too many hormones

Thyroid nodules or cancer – formation of lumps or tumors

Most Common Thyroid Symptoms

1. Restlessness and Anxiety

Feeling anxious or nervous without reason may indicate an overactive thyroid.

Hyperthyroidism speeds up metabolism, leading to increased stress and nervousness.

2. Mood Swings and Hand Tremors

Mood swings are frequent in hyperthyroid patients.

Mild hand tremors may also occur in rare conditions like Hashimoto’s encephalopathy.

3. Unexplained Weight Changes

Weight gain without dietary or lifestyle changes may indicate hypothyroidism.

Low thyroid hormone levels reduce energy consumption, slowing metabolism.

4. Other Possible Symptoms

Fatigue or constant tiredness

Swelling in the neck (goiter)

Cold intolerance or heat intolerance

Hair thinning, dry skin, or brittle nails

Thyroid Treatment

Consult a doctor if symptoms persist.

Diagnosis includes tests for TSH, T3, and T4 levels.

Treatment options depend on the condition:

Medications to regulate hormone levels

Radioactive iodine therapy to shrink overactive thyroid tissue

Surgery in severe cases or thyroid nodules

Lifestyle recommendations:

Balanced, iodine-rich diet

Regular exercise

Stress management

Avoid smoking and alcohol.
