The malayalam movie "Pathonpatham Noottandu" (which translates to "19th Century"), which was released in the first week of september of this year, failed to make much of an impression at the box office, earning only about 8+ crores. Nevertheless, the 18th-century drama directed by Vinayan, which is set in the former Travancore kingdom and is based on the life of Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker, who struggled against upper castes and the british for looking down on the underprivileged, has been a success.
The director included several shocking moments in his work, such as one in which semi-naked women are thrashed and had taxes placed on their breasts. Historians disagree, but director Vinayan claimed he had used artistic licence. This movie will be available at the telugu box office in a few weeks. We must wait and see if it truly functions as a Kantara, as the creators are hoping, given that the original Pathonpatham Noottandu is currently available on amazon Prime with subtitles and that the movie is extremely forthright regarding caste issues.
