Targeting the Govt., the Oppn team arrives Manipur...

A group of 21 MPs from the recently formed opposition indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) travelled to Manipur on saturday for a two-day tour to assess the situation and visited relief camps housing displaced persons. Since May 3, when ethnic violence between the numerically dominant Meitei community, which makes up 53% of the state's population and primarily inhabits the Imphal Valley, and tribal Kukis, who live primarily in the hill districts, erupted in the northeastern state, at least 150 people have died and nearly 50,000 have been displaced.

At a demonstration held on saturday in Imphal by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), an umbrella Meitei group, thousands of people demanded peace and an end to what they called "narco-terrorism" in the state. At the conclusion of the rally, a five-point resolution was adopted, calling for the cessation of the current conflict, the eradication of narcoterrorism, the preservation of Manipur's territorial integrity, the implementation of the National Register of Citizens, and the calling of a special session of the state assembly by august 5.

When asked about the BJP's claims that the Manipur problem has been politicised, congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who is also a member of the india team, said: "We would have been very glad to be a part of an all-party group led by the prime minister. However, he is entirely absent from the scene. He has not spoken a word in parliament about Manipur.
