The agreement followed President Muizhu's meetings with Major General Zhang Bagun, deputy director of China's office of international Military Cooperation, and Ren Shengjun, head of the Export-Import bank of China. China's aid to the maldives has historically played a key role in urban and economic development. The maldives, with its 26 atolls and 1,192 islands made up mostly of coral reefs and sandbars, faces acute shortages of groundwater and fresh water, exacerbated by climate change.
