Gulfisha Fatima, an accused in the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case regarding the alleged conspiracy behind the riots in north-east delhi in february 2020, argued before the high court on tuesday (May 27) that she was part of a peaceful protest and there is no evidence to show her involvement in the violence related to the riots.

Fatima's lawyer made this claim in his arguments before the delhi High Court. A bench of Justice naveen Chawla and Justice Shalinder Kaur was hearing Fatima's bail plea. The lawyer objected to the prosecution's allegations that his client incited local women to collect red chilli powder, bottles and sticks. The lawyer stressed that nothing was recovered from Fatima's possession.

He said that although Fatima had organised the protest site in Seelampur, the atmosphere was peaceful when she was present at the Chakka Jam organised in Jafrabad. He said that she is a permanent resident of Seelampur.

The next hearing of the case will be on July 1

The lawyer also questioned the credibility of the statements of witnesses and alleged that the prosecution has tried to 'distort the facts'. The high court has fixed July 1 as the date for the next hearing of the case.

Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and many others have been booked under the provisions of UAPA and the indian Penal Code for allegedly being the 'main conspirators' of the february 2020 riots. 53 people were killed and more than 700 were injured in this incident. The bail petitions of Sharjeel Imam and co-accused—Khalid Saifi, Fatima and others—have been pending in the high court since 2022 and have been heard by different benches from time to time.
