Chennai: In a major step towards scientific solid waste management, tamil Nadu minister for Municipal Administration K. N. Nehru inaugurated a large-scale bio-mining project aimed at clearing accumulated legacy waste at the Perungudi dump yard in Chennai. The project has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of 53.60 crore.

The initiative is being implemented by the Greater chennai Corporation as part of the state government’s continued efforts to modernize urban waste management systems and reduce environmental pollution.

♻️ Clearing Years of Accumulated Waste

The Perungudi dump yard has been one of Chennai’s major waste disposal sites for decades, with large volumes of untreated municipal solid waste piling up over the years. The new bio-mining project aims to scientifically process and remove this legacy waste using eco-friendly techniques.

Through bio-mining, old garbage heaps will be excavated, segregated, and processed. Recyclable materials such as plastics, metals, and glass will be recovered, while organic waste will be treated and converted into compost or bio-soil. Non-recyclable inert materials will be disposed of safely.

🌱 Environmental and Public health Benefits

Speaking at the inauguration, minister K.N. Nehru stated that the project would significantly reduce environmental hazards, including the following:

  • Groundwater contamination
  • Air pollution caused by methane emissions
  • Fire risks at dump sites
  • Foul odor affecting nearby residential areas

He emphasized that the initiative aligns with the tamil Nadu government’s commitment to creating cleaner and greener urban spaces while protecting public health.

🏗️ Project Scope and Implementation

The ₹53.60-crore project is expected to:

  • Clear a substantial portion of legacy waste accumulated over several years
  • Reclaim valuable land for future development or green spaces
  • Improve waste processing efficiency in the city.

Officials noted that modern machinery and scientific methods will be deployed to ensure the safe and timely completion of the work.

🌍 Part of a Larger Urban Mission

The bio-mining initiative at Perungudi is part of a broader waste management reform plan being undertaken across tamil Nadu. Similar projects have been initiated in other urban local bodies to eliminate old junkyards and transition towards sustainable solid waste management practices.

With this project, chennai moves closer to its goal of transforming dumpyards into environmentally safe zones, marking a significant milestone in urban environmental governance.
