Every year in the month of Magha, people around the world celebrate Mahashivratri, a festival honouring Lord Shiva. If you're also fasting during Mahashivratri, there are a few rules you should go by.

Every year, in the month of Magha in the South indian calendar and Phalguna in the North indian calendar, Lord Shiva's festival of Mahashivratri, one of the major Hindu deities, is celebrated. Mahashivratri is not the same as Shivratri, which is observed every month and a total of 12 times a year. legend has it that the night when Lord shiva performs his Tandava Nritya is known as Mahashivratri, or the Great Night of Shiva. 

According to a different mythology, the day honours the evening when shiva and Parvati exchanged vows. Mahashivratri will be celebrated this year on february 18th, 2023 (Saturday).

Mahashivratri celebrations

All over the nation, from Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and bihar to Karnataka, tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, Mahashivratri is observed. Shiv archana is performed in shiva temples around the nation by devotees who also present milk, Bilva , sandalwood paste, ghee, sugar, and other bhog products to the Shivling. Shiv devotees undergo a 24-hour fast that is broken the next morning. Mahashivratri Puja, in contrast to many other festivals, is performed at night.
