Google is integrating its gemini AI assistant into google Maps.
The update allows users to talk to Maps instead of tapping the screen.
Google describes using Maps with gemini as having a helpful friend in the passenger seat.
Users can ask questions, get route guidance, and perform simple tasks like adding events to google Calendar.
The feature will roll out in the united states first, available on both Android and iOS in the coming weeks.
Voice Navigation With Gemini
Gemini allows hands-free operation, enabling drivers to speak commands instead of touching the phone.
Users can:
Ask for directions
Make route changes
Report traffic incidents verbally, such as accidents or congestion
Google Maps will update the route automatically based on real-time voice reports.
Directions become more intuitive, using landmarks (e.g., “turn right after the Thai Siam restaurant”) instead of only distances.
Nearby landmarks are also highlighted on the map for easier navigation.
Small Tasks While Driving
Gemini helps users perform simple tasks safely while driving.
For example, you can add items to google Calendar without taking your eyes off the road.
The goal is to reduce distractions and keep drivers focused on driving.
New gemini Lens Features
Google Maps now provides traffic alerts even when not actively navigating.
Users are notified if a road is blocked or experiencing delays.
Gemini Lens allows you to use your camera to explore nearby places:
Tap the camera icon in the search bar.
Point your phone at a restaurant, cafe, shop, or landmark.
Ask questions using voice commands.
This feature will roll out later this month on Android and iOS in the US.
