On june 5, 2025, the Israeli Defense Ministry confirmed that israel and germany have jointly started preparations for the delivery of Arrow 3 air defense missile system in the coming months. This deal is the largest export agreement in Israel's defense history and further strengthens the strategic relationship between germany and israel amid growing missile threats in Europe.

What is Arrow 3?

Arrow 3 is a state-of-the-art missile defense system capable of shooting down long-range ballistic missiles mid-air by going outside the Earth's atmosphere. It is the upper level of Israel's multi-layer air defense strategy, which already includes systems like iron Dome and David's Sling. This system has been developed by israel Aerospace industries (IAI) with the help of America and 'hit-to-kill' technology has been used in it which directly collides with the enemy missile and destroys it.

germany becomes the first european country

Arrow 3 is being delivered to europe for the first time and germany has become the first NATO country to include it in its military system. This is a historic turning point in the defense sector between israel and europe and gives new heights to NATO's air defense strength.

$ 3.5 billion deal

A historic agreement was reached for this system on 17 august 2023 in which the defense ministers of israel and germany signed a deal worth about $ 3.5 billion. This happened with the approval of the US as America is also involved as a co-manufacturer of this system.

Technical strength

Arrow 3 has solid fuel booster, high speed maneuver capability, powerful radar and command and control system made by ELTA. This system can intercept missiles at a distance of more than 2,000 kilometers and can target enemy missiles at an altitude of more than 100 kilometers. It is specially designed to deal with nuclear-capable ballistic and hypersonic missiles.

Important role in Germany's security plan

Arrow 3 has been made a part of Germany's european Sky shield Initiative. Its objective is to protect against missile threats across the european region, which also includes the protection of Germany's important infrastructure and strategic locations. This system will be able to protect germany from long-range missile attacks and will prove to be a security shield for NATO.
