During Phase 2, Kevin Feige seriously contemplated quitting the Marvel Cinematic Universe to take over DC. Feige was appointed in command of Marvel Companies in the mid-2000s after years of working on and producing Marvel films for other studios. He was tasked with crafting a new slate of films utilising "B-list" characters. Marvel Studios and the MCU have been a hollywood staple over the last decade thanks to his supervision. The MCU films have grossed over $26 billion globally at the box office, and the studio's recent expansion to the small screen with Disney+ has demonstrated the shared universe's potential.

Warner Bros. sought to replicate the success of the MCU with their DC Comics characters on the big screen at the same time. Man of Steel was supposed to be the start of a shared world, but polarising films, a changing door of executives, and Zack Snyder's final leave resulted in the DC Extended Universe reconsidering its future after the release of Justice League. The DC films have now found their footing by avoiding direct competition with Marvel's heavily interwoven plot, something Feige appears to have nailed. And, while Feige is now widely regarded as Marvel Studios' irreplaceable leader as the studio enters Phase 4, that wasn't always the case.

During Phase 2, it was no secret that Feige was dissatisfied with Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter, who was Feige's direct superior at the time. Because of his growing dissatisfaction with Perlmutter's restrictions on the movies he could make and the characters he could use, it appears that Feige seriously considered leaving Marvel for DC. Insider Matthew Belloni mentioned the potential move that didn't materialise while discussing DC's future with Warner Bros. Discovery, according to a recent Puck news piece.
