International Day of education : History/significance...

Building resilient and sustainable societies requires strong educational systems. For the development of a world that is peaceful and successful, it is crucial to provide all people with access to high-quality education.

Additionally, education equips individuals with the knowledge and abilities necessary to advance as individuals.

In order to emphasise that education is a fundamental human right and a civic duty, the international Day of education is observed each year on january 24.

The most effective means for governments to guarantee development and expansion worldwide is education. But there is a severe disparity in access to education. Due to the temporary shutdown of schools, colleges, universities, and other educational institutions, the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this imbalance. This makes the international Day of education in 2023 even more significant.

History

On december 3, 2018, the United Nations General assembly passed a resolution designating january 24 as the international Day of Education.

The UNGA's purpose was to acknowledge and honour the contribution that education makes to world peace and development.

Nigeria and 58 other Member States co-authored resolution 73/25, "International Day of education," which was adopted to show the world community's unwavering political commitment to promoting inclusive, equitable, and high-quality education for all.

Significance

The realisation of Sustainable Development Goal 4, which calls for high-quality education for all, is supported in large part by increased international cooperation, which is strengthened by the international Day of Education. The international Day of education is observed by all relevant parties, including UN members, UN agencies, non-governmental organisations, academic institutions, and the commercial sector.

The yearly commemoration of this day is organised by UNESCO, the specific United Nations agency for education, in close cooperation with all the stakeholders.
