Just when you thought the Badshaah had abdicated, he has roaringly reclaimed his throne. After a four-year hiatus, during which his family was defamed, his capacity to entertain audiences was continually questioned, and a lobby attempted to sabotage his comeback by calling for a boycott, Shah Rukh Khan returned with Pathaan, performed, and triumphed.

This was required by yash Raj Films, which had a difficult 2021–22. deepika padukone needs this because she was made into a punching bag following the Besharam Rang song controversy and because her most recent huge blockbuster was Padmaavat in 2018. Both john Abraham, whose films had recently struggled, and bollywood, which was being criticised and encouraged to take lessons from South Asian filmmakers, needed this. The distributors and theatres required this. Shah Rukh, though, was the one who required this outstanding reception the most. The fact that Pathaan received praise from critics as well is the cherry on top.

The cacophony of critics grew louder with the failure of Shah Rukh's home production Zero. Aamir, Shah Rukh, and Salman, the holy trinity of bollywood actors who were all born in 1965, were mocked as being too old. And yet, here we are in 2023, where Shah Rukh, now 57, avoided the press and interacted with fans directly by conducting his well-known AMA (ask me anything) on Twitter, where he expressed gratitude to followers and responded to trolls with his signature humour.

Khan realised after the fact that Pathaan was his secret weapon. The action movie is a vintage big-screen commercial entertainer, which is rare in contemporary hindi cinema. The movie isn't too serious about itself, but it also doesn't take its viewers for granted. It is aware of what audiences desire—whistle-worthy conversations, euphoric highs, epic action sequences, a formidable adversary, a seductive femme fatale, a rewarding cameo, and a bruised and battered hero whose resolve and devotion for his country get him through.
