The National Crimes Record Bureau has published a list of India's safest cities for the year 2022. In kolkata, there are 86.5 recorded crimes for every 1 lakh people. pune has 280.7 recorded crimes per 1 lakh people, whereas hyderabad has 299.2 instances. maharashtra has the greatest number of public riot cases in the whole country. The most killings occur in Uttar Pradesh, whereas the most rapes occur in Rajasthan.

According to NCRB statistics, the eastern metropolis had 86.5 incidents of cognizable offenses per lakh population in 2022, followed by pune (280.7) and hyderabad (299.2). Cognizable crimes are those for which charges are filed under certain provisions of the indian Penal Code (IPC) and SLL (Special and local Laws).

According to the NCRB study, in 2021, kolkata had 103.4 incidents of cognizable crimes per lakh population, which has fallen to 86.5 this year. The figure for 2020 was 129.5. pune and hyderabad recorded 256.8 and 259.9 cognizable offenses per lakh population in 2021, respectively. The rankings were determined by comparing 19 cities with populations of more than 20 lakh people.
