Ponniyin Selvan might be considered Mani Ratnam's magnum effort. The film, based on kalki Krishnamurthy's historical fiction novel of the same name, stars Chiyaan Vikram, jayam Ravi, aishwarya Rai Bachchan, trisha krishnan, Sobhita Dhulipala, and many more in key parts. The film was released in two parts and received extensive criticism from both fans and reviewers, particularly for the way the Chola dynasty was portrayed. However, during a recent public event, music director Ilaiyaraaja stated that the film had little resemblance to the novels.

During the ceremony, the renowned music director reminisced about his adolescent years, when he and a few pals would virtually fight to read Ponniyin Selvan.  He claimed that the story fueled his imagination, and that even now, when he thinks about ponniyin selvan, he is reminded of Kalki's quick wit and the caricatures painted by Maniam. 'Mani Ratnam's ponniyin selvan did like ponniyin selvan,' he added.

Mani Ratnam and Ilaiyaraaja have a close bond. In fact, the team has worked together on nearly ten films, including Mani Ratnam's first feature Pallavi Anu Pallavi, Mouna Ragam, Nayakan, Thalapathi, and many others. ponniyin selvan tells the story of the titular character, who goes on to become the famous Rajaraja Chola. The video also alluded to the dangers that the Chola dynasty faced at the period. AR rahman created the soundtrack for the film, which was produced by Lyca Productions.
