The State government's Gruha jyothi plan, which offers up to 200 units of free power, was formally inaugurated on Friday, and the Discoms have begun delivering "zero electricity bills" to the recipients. Many customers in the State who used power within their usual use were given "zero" bills. On Friday, Kothaguda and Gangaram mandals in mahabubabad saw the official start of the zero billing project by panchayat raj Minister D Anasuya.
 

On Friday, it was observed that meter readers from telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL) were giving zero bills to recipients in Quthbullapur, Yousufguda, vidya Nagar, Saroornagar, and other areas within the jurisdiction of the hyderabad municipal corporation-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>greater hyderabad municipal corporation (GHMC).
 
No invoices were sent to the recipients who live in districts like Sangareddy, mahabubabad, Khammam, Warangal, Karimnagar, Mulugu, Bhupalpally, and Wanaparthy.
 
T Prabhu Singh, a beneficiary from Yousufguda, was given a zero bill despite having consumed 106 units and receiving a charge of Rs. 489. In a similar vein, P Bashetty of the Quthbullapur division's Kakatiya nagar colony received a zero charge despite using 65 units.
 

According to the principles of the Gruha jyothi program, all customers who use an average of less than 200 units of power (average to be determined based on consumption in 2022-23) would get a $0 electricity bill. The program continues to benefit even those who receive non-zero bills; they are only required to pay for use that exceeds their allotted units.

Each qualified family whose usage for a given month is up to 200 units will receive a zero charge for that month, according to electricity officials. According to them, the system would only apply to those with a single meter or more. "The government will release the subsidy amount after Discoms sends the details by the 20th of every month," authorities said.

The officials warned that anyone discovered utilizing the advantages for non-domestic activities would face consequences under the indian Penal Code and the electricity Act.

An updated bill under the Gruha jyothi plan's requirements will be provided to the customer upon verification of eligibility, should they choose to apply for the scheme if they haven't already. The Vote on Account budget for 2024–2025 includes Rs. 2,418 crores from the State government for the program.
