Now that the duration of Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning has been disclosed, the movie has broken previous franchise records.  Tom Cruise returned as superspy Ethan Hunt for six more adventures after the 1996 first Mission: Impossible was a hit. The most recent of them, dubbed Dead Reckoning, was released in 2023.  In the Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning plot, Hunt will try to eliminate the Entity, an AI menace, once and for all. Cruise will now reunite with director Christopher McQuarrie to maybe say goodbye to the franchise.

A new ad for The Final Reckoning on the AMC Theaters website now shows that Mission: Impossible 8 will be two hours and 49 minutes with credits.  This makes it the longest film in the franchise's history, as the chart below illustrates.
What This Means For The Final Reckoning

Will The Runtime Hurt Or Help The Mission: Impossible Movie?
Although it hasn't been confirmed officially yet, the title and the trailer's air of finality imply that the next Mission: Impossible film will be the last.  The film may be particularly lengthy because it will also be a franchise farewell, but the extended runtime also shows how epic Hunt's next quest will be.  However, a lot could rely on the box office, and if The Final Reckoning is a success, it appears likely that the door will remain open for future film.

The box office may be impacted by runtime.  In addition to some audiences merely not wanting to sit that long for a movie, longer runtimes also limit how many times a day a movie can screen in theaters.  The top three highest-grossing films of all time, however, avatar (2h 42m), Avengers: Endgame (3h 1m), and Avatar: The Way of Water (3h 12m), demonstrate that people are still eager to attend large crowds for the proper films, even if they are a good two and a half hours long.
