Two highly successful MCU films have already attempted to replicate the qualities that makes The Fantastic: Four First Steps such a distinctive rendition of Marvel's First Family.  Matt Shakman's The Fantastic Four: First Steps begins Phase 6 after Thunderbolts* concludes Phase 5, marking the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga and the countdown to the release of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.  Everything appears to be in place for The Fantastic Four: First Steps to be a hugely successful MCU entry, but there is a lot riding on it.

Even though the Fantastic Four are well-known from comic books, none of their four films to date have achieved the same degree of success as the Avengers films.  Marvel Studios is depending on Matt Shakman's demonstrated ability to place fictitious characters in certain periods of world history in order to take the Fantastic Four to a universe never seen before, which will help the heroes stand out in the MCU.  Marvel's First Family is set in a separate universe in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

With its 1960s-inspired setting, The Fantastic Four: First Steps offers a whole new perspective on Marvel's First Family, departing from the previous four Fantastic Four films.  The Fantastic Four from the MCU live in a another reality where they are the biggest celebrities in the world and the only superheroes on Earth.  In terms of technology, fashion, and architecture, Society is a retrofuturistic reimagining of New York in the 1960s that references actual mid-twentieth-century pop culture and art.  The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the third MCU period piece, following Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain Marvel, however it is the only one with this style.
