These energy weapons, created by the Israeli defense firm Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, aim a powerful light beam at a target and utilize heat to either destroy or seriously harm it. "Throughout the current war, the IAF, including its Aerial Defense Array soldiers, studied and deployed the laser systems in the field, achieving outstanding interception rates that saved civilian lives and protected national assets," Rafael stated in a statement.
Prototype use "culminated" with the "world's first successful high-power laser interceptions on the battlefield," according to Brig. Gen. Yehuda Elmakayes, head of the ministry's defense and research division. "We are currently integrating these insights into the systems under development while expanding the range of laser-based systems to protect Israeli civilians and IDF forces," he stated.
Laser beam weapon in action
The laser weapon system made at least three interceptions in a video released by Israel's Ministry of Defense. The drone was observed burning and crashing after the laser ignited its wingtip during one of the clashes. The drone threats israel has encountered from Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Iranian-backed Houthis in yemen seemed to be comparable to these enemy-flying weapons. The drones are shaped like crucifixes and have a V-tail on the back.
The laser system will be used in conjunction with the potent iron Beam system, a wider network of comparable devices that is now under development, according to the Israeli military. Instead of investing in costly missile interceptors, experts think laser systems might be used to destroy less expensive enemy targets, such as drones.
