In terms of economic equality, india has overtaken both china and the US. A World bank analysis states that india is now the fourth most equal nation in the world, with inequality having decreased dramatically between 2011–12 and 2022–23. This comes in addition to a dramatic decline in extreme poverty, which fell from 16.2% in 2011–12 to 2.3% in 2022–23, according to an official statement using World bank data.

The administration clarified that multifaceted programs and tactics created in the past ten years are to blame for the decrease in inequality. Slovakia, Slovenia, and belarus are the only three nations with a superior (lower) Gini Index score, which is a numerical indicator of equality.

Compared to nations like china, the united states, and the United Kingdom, india is in a far better position.  "...India's Gini Index stands at 25.5, making it the fourth most equal country in the world, after the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, and belarus," the news agency PTI reports.

When assessing how equally income, wealth, and consumption are distributed among households or individuals in a nation, the Gini Index can be helpful.  The values of the index vary from 0 to 100.

A score of 100 indicates that there is total inequality since one individual has all income, wealth, or consumption (those who are poorer or less fortunate would have zero), while a score of 0 indicates that the nation is completely equal and all households have the same income, wealth, and consumption.  Inequality in the nation increases with the size of the Gini Index.

What is Gini Index?
India's score of 41.8 is significantly lower than that of the united states and substantially lower than that of china (35.7).  India is in the "moderately low" inequality group, which includes Gini scores between 25 and 30, according to the World bank report, which published statistics for 167 countries.

India is just one step away from being a member of the "low inequality" category.

The administration credited this accomplishment to a significant decline in poverty during the previous ten years.

In the last ten years, 171 million indians have been brought out of extreme poverty, according to a World bank analysis.

From 16.2% in 2011–12 to just 2.3% in 2022–23, the percentage of people living on less than USD 2.15 a day—the global threshold for extreme poverty until june 2025—dropped precipitously.

Only 30 countries worldwide—including several welfare-strong european nations—are classified as having "moderately low" levels of inequality.

These consist of Belgium, Finland, Norway, and Iceland.  It also includes affluent countries like the United Arab Emirates and developing economies like Poland.

According to the release, India's Gini Index throughout time reflects the country's progress towards a more equal society.

In 2011, the index was 28.8, and in 2022, it was 25.5.

"This steady shift shows that india has made consistent progress in combining economic growth with social equity," it stated.

It said that a number of targeted government programs support India's path towards greater income equality.

These programs seek to empower marginalized and vulnerable populations, provide financial access, and provide welfare benefits effectively.

"Together, they have helped bridge gaps, boost livelihoods, and ensure that growth reaches all sections of society," said the press statement.

It has mentioned programs that have aided india in its efforts to achieve greater income equality, including Stand-Up india, Direct Benefit Transfer, and PM Jan Dhan Yojana.

"India has taken a consistent and targeted approach to achieving income equality.  The 25.5 Gini Index is more than just a figure.  It shows how people's lives have actually changed.  According to the announcement, more families now have access to jobs, banking, food, and healthcare.

It said that India's ability to strike a balance between robust social protection and economic transformation is what makes it unique.

Long-standing deficiencies have been filled in part by targeted programs like Jan Dhan, DBT, and Ayushman Bharat," the statement stated.

In the meantime, initiatives like PM Vishwakarma Yojana and Stand-Up india are assisting individuals in building wealth and securing their livelihoods on their own terms.
