Online gambling is destroying various families in India. Many people are even committing suicide after losing money in online gambling. To solve this problem, the tamil Nadu government has already formed a body called the tamil Nadu Online Gaming Commission. This five-member body, formed in august 2023, banned real money gaming platforms operating in tamil Nadu. Following tamil Nadu, the karnataka state government is also preparing to take such a step. The karnataka state government has prepared the karnataka Police Amendment Bill 2025 to control online gambling. The karnataka state government is planning to introduce it in the upcoming legislative session and make it a law. If this draft bill becomes law, online gambling conducted through the internet and mobile phone apps will be banned in the state of Karnataka.
The draft bill states that only skill-based competitions will be exempted. It has also been stated that sites that can offer such online games in the state of karnataka must apply to the government and obtain a proper license. For this, the karnataka state government is going to create an organization called the karnataka Online Games and Betting Regulatory Authority. This commission will have the power to examine whether a game is played based on skill or money and issue licenses. Those who violate the provisions of this law can be sentenced to three years in prison and a fine of one lakh rupees. If they repeat the same mistake, it has been reported that they will be fined five lakh rupees along with a three-year jail term. The draft bill also states that those who gamble and play games at illegal places will be fined ten thousand rupees and will be sentenced to six months in prison. The Online Games and Betting Regulatory Authority will act as a body to regulate and monitor all online games and gambling in the state of Karnataka.

A person with experience in law, public administration, and technology will be appointed as the chairman of this body. Apart from that, it has been reported that the commission will have three members, one from the IT sector, one from the finance sector, and one from the social welfare sector. The online gaming industry in india was valued at $3.1 billion in FY2023 and is expected to grow to $3.8 billion in FY2024. Of this $3.8 billion in revenue, $2.4 billion comes from the real money gaming segment. The sector is expected to grow to $9.2 billion in the next five years. Therefore, the right course of action would be to regulate the sector rather than ban it, said Anurag Saxena, CEO of the E-Gaming Federation.
