After years of anticipation, tesla has officially entered the indian market by launching its first showroom. Located at Maker Maxcity Mall in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), the showroom opens today. This marks the formal debut of the American EV company in India. The move follows long-standing discussions between tesla and the indian government. tesla is starting its indian journey with the Model Y SUV, a popular model in global markets. The rear-wheel drive variant is priced at Rs. 60 lakhs. While the long-range version is available for Rs. 68 lakhs. These prices are significantly higher than Tesla's prices in the US and china due to high import duties, as the cars are brought in as fully assembled units. Despite the premium, tesla is aiming to attract early EV adopters with its brand value and advanced technology.
All tesla vehicles sold in india will be imported from the company's Gigafactory in Shanghai. Six Model Y units designed for demonstration and customer test drives have already arrived in the country, according to reports. In addition to the vehicles, tesla has also brought in nearly \$1 million worth of Superchargers and EV accessories. These are expected to be installed in mumbai and the surrounding areas.
It is providing charging infrastructure to early tesla users. Following the mumbai launch, tesla plans to open another showroom in Delhi. However, its earlier discussions about setting up a manufacturing plant in india seem to have been put on hold for now. Instead, tesla seems to be focusing on creating a premium retail experience through imports.
A service centre is also being set up in Mumbai's Kurla West to support customers with maintenance and after-sales needs. tesla already has a registered corporate office in Bengaluru and a technology and engineering centre in Pune. With the opening of its first showroom, the company has made its initial move into India's EV sector. And future growth will depend on customer response and policy developments.
