This decision came to light on the very first day of the monsoon session of parliament, which not only surprised the leaders but also intensified the political discussion across the country. In his resignation letter sent to President Draupadi Murmu, Dhankhar cited health reasons and medical consultation. With his resignation, now a new election is set to be held for the second largest constitutional post in the country and this process can also affect many political equations.
How are the Vice President's elections held?
The Vice President is elected by the members of both the Houses of parliament - lok sabha and Rajya Sabha. These elections are held under the secret ballot and single transferable vote system, in which MPs rank the candidates in order of preference.

What is the further process?
According to Article 68 (2) of the Constitution, if the term of the Vice President is ending, then the election is completed in advance. But in case of any emergency like death, resignation or removal, it is necessary to conduct the election as soon as possible. However, according to sources, there is no possibility of Vice Presidential election in the current monsoon session of parliament and the election process may take place in the next session. The term of the Vice President is five years, but the current Vice President can remain in office until a new person takes office.
